The GBMK Elmer Program

The Green Bay Mike and Key Club has an "Elmer" program designed to assist members, especially members new to amateur radio, who would like a little help with questions that relate to amateur radio. This program pairs the new member with a more experienced member of GBMK we call an "Elmer." The Elmers volunteer their services so a new member knows that his or her Elmer is ready and willing to help. Elmers don't necessarily have all the answers, of course, but they will help where they can. An Elmer might be able to answer your technical question or your operating question, or might be able at least to introduce you to a member who is very knowledgeable and experienced in the subject of your question. There are GBMK members who are active in DX (communication with foreign stations), QRP (communicating with less than five watts), rag chewing (casual conversation), emergency communications, communications in support of public service events, use of the digital modes, building radios and electronic equipment, and more.

Remember, being an Elmer or having an Elmer is strictly voluntary. However, the Elmer program is a great opportunity to get to know other club members, and can be an invaluable tool for learning more about the amateur radio hobby. All are encouraged to participate!
